i wanna party like it's 1999

Several photos from the past two weeks including some insane hologram sunglasses I scored on ebay, some even more rad vintage Bill Blass and Armani I scored at Goodwill, a pile of clothes on my bed while I was trying to decide what to wear on labor day (I had to remind myself it's not 1972), a sign at Space 15 Twenty and some nail art from the awesome ladies at Kleur. I booked an appointment with Kleur at their Space 15 Twenty location and paid $45 for this manicure set. Honestly, I think it's totally worth it. They normally charge $35, but I wanted a special set that cost more. It's awesome. I can't stop staring at my nails. And as I type this, my heart breaks a little at the thought that they typing will slowly chip away at the polish. Good thing I already booked my next appointment.

all of this i'll soon forget

Alright, so several pictures from the past few weeks. There's a driveway that kind of looks like every album cover of an indie band. You know what I mean? Anyways, a hilarious post it note above a street sign (although the best I've seen was the word 'Kony' in Sharpie written under a stop sign), some flower trims and a yin-yang button I picked up, a Marc Jacobs top I came across the next day (can you tell I'm loving daisies) and my pretty crappy alien nail art. As far as the nail art, I think I have a pretty valid excuse. I drank sooooo much coffee that day! And you should see me after a small cup, I start doing the Ian Curtis dance. I'm not saying I'm the best at this nail art stuff, but a while back I did some flame nails that I thought were pretty good. At least for an inexperienced artist, I considered them good. But believe me, these were total Monet's....amazing from afar, weird up close.

By the way, stay tuned for details on the giveaway. If you follow the facebook page, you know what I'm talking about.

who gives a fuck about an oxford comma?

Some photos from the past week. I went to the American Apparel flea market which was so conveniently located down the street from where I work. I ended up going twice and finding a ton of good deals. Also some studded nail decals from Target (yeah, Target) as well as my ticket for the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Best flea market around, especially if you like to haggle. I just went for litereally 20 minutes looking for one vendor in particular. It's these two hispanic guys that sell a TON of rad vintage shirts for $8 and cut-offs of all different colors for $10. I'm talking about what's in YOUR closet that you bought for $60. The shirts are just amazing. Also these black platform oxfords are being sold by yours truly. I'm selling them on ebay for $20 starting bid. If you like what you see, go check 'em out.

The oxfords are on sale HERE.

there is no one on earth i'm afraid of

Alright, so I know I've been seriously lacking in posts this week and I just gotta say, it happens to everyone. We just kind of stray off from our normal path and other things pre-occupy our minds, but I think/hope I'm back on track, so stay tuned for many more posts. These are just some pictures from the past week including another hotel on Main St. in Downtown, a closer look on a collar tip, some cool Occupy art in Echo Park, an insane alligator bracelet I just bought, a Shakespeare book that will be the focus of my next DIY project and some Cha Cha Cover nails. I bought several and will be posting them in the weeks to come. I really love these nail decals, just ridiculously cool and easy to apply. By far, the most difficult to apply have been the Topshop brand, I'm sad to say. They were such a pain in the ass to apply and only lasted about 3-4 days. These are super easy to put on, like those temporary tattoos, just add water and apply. I'll be posting more of the nail covers in the following weeks. Oh, and they just got in Morrissey decals. Yeah. MORRISSEY decals!!!

Featured Designer: Cha Cha Covers

This month's featured designer is a new nail decal designer. I've been constantly talking about my new found love of nail decals (they're remarkably easy to do) and I found this brand off of Etsy. Run by Ana Guajardo, a Texan native born in Mexico and residing in LA, Cha Cha Covers have some seriously awesome designs. I had a chance to interview Ana and she gave me some cool details on her new brand:

How long have you been designing?

I've been working on developing Cha Cha Covers since February, and finally got them off the ground and in the market in March. It took me a little time to engineer the idea and get them just right.

What motivated you to start selling on Etsy?

Etsy is an outlet where people find off-beat, interesting and non-commericial goods, so I thought my decals would reach the perfect audience on Etsy. Sure enough, they have been very well received on Etsy, I'm getting orders from across the nation and around the world!

In a nutshell, how do you create the decals?

I design them on photoshop and print them on a special paper that must be treated to maintain their color and texture. It was challenging at first because I wanted to use the least toxic ingredients possible since these are used on the body I wanted them to be safe.

Where do you find inspiration for your nail designs?

I have always included images in my work that are not easily found in the mainstream and appeal to a niche market seeking imagery that resonates with global cultures. I am a Mexican-born Chicana, residing in a global city, so I am inspired by Latino culture, urban images as well as African and Middle-Eastern art. I try to incorporate imagery that my LA neighbors will like, and since LA is like a microcosm of our diverse country really, people across the nation seem to respond to my designs. My first decals were of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Papel Picado (Mexican cut paper flags) and they were a hit simply because people had never seen these very culturally specific Mexican images in nail decals before. Since I’ve expanded to sugar skulls and other designs I enjoy giving fun titles to, like “African lolliPOP” and “Magic Carpet Ride” that reference African and Moroccan cultures, respectively.

Will you be expanding your line beyond decals and earrings?

I have been dreaming up a few other ideas using the same technique I use on the decals. Apparently I like to cover things, haha! I actually started out making decorative light switch covers, something I have done for over ten years, but only really sell at festivals and events. So now I’m thinking of covering glass candles and perhaps even clutches. I’m having a lot of fun with the decals though, so before I move on I want to design a huge variety of decals, the possibilities are endless!

The decals and earrings are available on the Cha Cha Covers Etsy site, or you can click HERE. With the Mexican/Southwest trend going on, these nails are the perfect accessories! Best part? All the nail decals cost $5! Something else that's awesome? Shipping is $1!! You definitely don't need to have an expanded bank account to afford some awesome nail art!

be a world child

Some photos from the past week including TWO different nail art decals I put on (still going strong with them and LOVING them), two street art pictures from Downtown LA, a tie dye dress I made trying to mimic the UNIF Deadstock dress and last Monday I went to Bardot to catch Samantha Ronson. I thought she was doing a DJ set, actually, I really didn't know she sings. Barcelona was playing that night too and overall it was really great. I've noticed a lot of my weekly pictures tend to be of street art, and you guys have to understand that street art is EVERYWHERE in LA and it adds a great ambiance to the city. I mean, Downtown already has a great atmosphere, but it definitely adds to it.

nail in my coffin

So this week I posted a picture of my new lace nails, and I am constantly getting compliments on them. I love doing my nails, but I find that you have to set aside a good 2 hours, just to let them dry. With nail stickers/nail art, you don't have to wait at all. I think I'm kind of addicted to this already. It's a trend seen on the runways for a while, but I haven't seen too many people tackling this very easy trend, and in LA, that's surprising. I have another set of nail art ready to go and I'll apply them this weekend. The nail art above is all from Topshop except the last set which is, obviously, from Sephora. My lace nails are also from Sephora. I strongly recommend trying this trend, because it's so easy and the results are too kick-ass to pass up! (Those America nails are mine!!)
